Concrete Driveway Repair in Cleveland and Northeast Ohio

Most cracked or flaking driveways in Greater Cleveland do not need to be torn out right away. Crack sealing, patching, resurfacing and leveling can add years to a slab that is still structurally sound, while a broken or heaved driveway is usually better replaced. LocalConcreteDriveway connects you with independent local contractors who can look at the damage and tell you honestly which side of that line you are on.

What kind of damage is on my driveway?

Naming the problem correctly makes it easier to compare what contractors tell you. Scaling is shallow flaking of the top surface, often in patches, and it is extremely common on Cleveland-area driveways that have seen years of rock salt.

Spalling goes deeper, with chunks breaking away and coarse stone showing. Pitting shows up as small craters scattered across the surface, and popouts are cone-shaped holes where a single piece of aggregate near the surface expanded and broke free.

Cracks come in several flavors: thin shrinkage cracks that appear in the first year, wider settlement cracks where the base gave way, and cracks with one side higher than the other from heaving or tree roots. Each points to a different cause and a different fix.

  • Scaling: thin surface flakes, often from salt and freeze-thaw
  • Spalling: deeper chips and chunks with exposed stone
  • Pitting and popouts: small holes scattered across the slab
  • Hairline cracks: usually shrinkage, often cosmetic
  • Offset or widening cracks: movement in the base or soil

Why do Cleveland driveways crack and flake so much?

Greater Cleveland goes through a long list of freeze-thaw cycles every winter. Water soaks into the pores of the concrete, freezes, expands and pushes the surface apart a little at a time, and road salt makes that process worse by keeping the surface wet and raising the number of cycles.

Much of the region also sits on clay soil that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. If a driveway was poured over a thin or poorly compacted base, that movement shows up as cracks and uneven slabs within a few years.

Finishing practices matter too. Concrete that was overworked, had water added on the surface or was poured without air entrainment tends to scale early, no matter how carefully the owner treats it afterward.

Can cracks in a concrete driveway be repaired?

Yes, as long as the slab on either side of the crack is level and solid. Contractors usually clean the crack out, sometimes widen it slightly so the material can grip, and fill it with a flexible sealant that can stretch as the concrete moves with the seasons.

The goal is to keep water out of the base. A crack that stays open lets melting snow run underneath, where it can wash out stone, freeze and push the slab up, and turn a cosmetic line into a real problem.

Expect a sealed crack to remain visible. Patching materials rarely match the surrounding concrete, and rigid fillers tend to break loose because the crack keeps opening and closing.

How do contractors fix spalling, scaling and pitting?

When surface damage is limited to a few spots, a contractor may grind out the loose material and patch with a polymer-modified repair mortar. That is a practical fix for an isolated area near the garage or where a car drips salty slush.

When the damage covers a large part of the driveway but the slab underneath is sound, resurfacing is often the better choice. A thin cement-based overlay is bonded to the cleaned surface, giving the whole driveway a new, uniform top layer.

Either way, sealing afterward with a penetrating silane or siloxane product helps slow down further salt damage. Without it, the same conditions that caused the flaking will keep working on the repaired surface.

Should I repair or replace my cracked driveway?

Repair is usually worth it when the damage is mostly on the surface, the slabs are still level with each other, and water drains away from the garage and house. A driveway in that condition can often be extended many more years with sealing, patching or resurfacing.

Replacement tends to make more sense when large sections are broken into loose pieces, slabs have heaved or sunk several inches, the driveway pitches back toward the house, or deep spalling covers most of the surface. At that point repairs are often temporary and you may pay twice.

Age plays a part as well. A driveway near the end of its useful life, especially one poured before air-entrained concrete was standard, may not be worth putting new money into. A contractor who does both repair and replacement can give you a balanced opinion.

  • Repair: hairline cracks, scattered scaling, sound and level slabs
  • Level first: a slab that sank but is still in one piece
  • Resurface: widespread surface wear over a structurally sound base
  • Replace: broken, heaved or badly sloped slabs, or deep damage everywhere

What does concrete driveway repair cost?

Repair pricing depends heavily on the specific damage, so we do not quote dollar figures for crack sealing or patching. Contractors typically consider the total length and width of cracks, how many areas need patching, how much prep and cleaning is required and whether a sealer is applied afterward.

Many contractors also have a minimum charge for small jobs, since a trip to fill a few cracks still means travel, setup and materials. Grouping several repairs, or adding a sidewalk or step repair, can make that minimum go further.

If resurfacing turns out to be the right fix, published guides put that work at roughly $3 to $10 per square foot, and full replacement typically adds removal costs on top of new concrete. Those ranges are from published guides, not our prices, and site conditions change every quote.

How can I keep repaired concrete in good shape?

Keep downspouts and sump lines discharging away from the driveway edge so water does not soak the base. Clear snow promptly rather than letting it pack into ice, and use sand or a gentler product sparingly instead of piling rock salt on the surface.

Never use deicers that contain ammonium nitrate or ammonium sulfate, which attack concrete chemically. Even calcium chloride and ordinary rock salt can contribute to scaling over time, especially on unsealed surfaces.

Reseal on the schedule recommended for your product, which commonly falls somewhere between two and five years. Walk the driveway each spring and seal new cracks while they are still thin.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is a hairline crack in my driveway a problem?

Thin shrinkage cracks are normal in concrete and usually cosmetic. Keep an eye on them, and have them sealed if they widen, start to offset or let water run underneath.

Can spalled concrete be patched?

Small spalled areas can often be ground out and patched with a repair mortar. If the spalling covers much of the driveway, resurfacing or replacement usually lasts longer than spot patches.

Will a patch match my old concrete?

Usually not exactly. Repair materials and new cement tend to be a different shade, though the difference softens as the surface weathers. Resurfacing gives a uniform look if appearance matters.

Why is my driveway flaking near the garage?

Salty slush dripping off cars tends to collect near the garage, keeping that area wet and salted through many freeze-thaw cycles. That is a classic setup for scaling, and sealing helps slow it down.

Can a sunken section be repaired without replacing it?

Often, yes. If the slab is still in one piece, leveling by mudjacking or polyjacking can lift it back into place. Broken or crumbling slabs generally need replacement.

How do I know if the base under my driveway has failed?

Signs include slabs that rock or sound hollow, cracks with one side lower than the other, and water pooling where it used to drain. A contractor can drill or probe to check.

When is the best time to repair a concrete driveway?

Most crack sealing, patching and resurfacing is done in mild, dry weather between spring and fall. Many repair products need temperatures above a set minimum to cure properly.
